ARBONET:

Amateur Radio Balloons Over North East Texas

ARBONET 8 - From Liftoff to Recovery, the flight went very well!

Shortly after 9AM Saturday, April 7, 2012 ARBONET 8 left earth behind and headed skyward. Comprising payloads from 3 different clubs, a string of 5 payloads were in tow behind a 1200 gram balloon. The balloon was inflated a little "hot" delivering between 1100 and 1400 feet per minute climb rate and bursting at approximately 86,000 feet. Decent was smooth, falling back to earth on the parachute and landing 3 out of 5 payloads on the ground, with two in a tree, but easily forced to ground as well with a few tugs on the line. APRS and RDF crews easily pin-pointed the location of the payloads and with permission of a very personable and helpful land owner, the payloads were retrieved. All payloads appeared ready for another flight. The SPOT tracker was used on this flight and also preformed very well, even providing correct data points along the route and pin-pointing the location as we hoped it would once it was back on the ground.

See the ARBONET FLIGHTS tab at left for pictures, video and more about the flight.
