Our friend and co-founder of ARBONET is now a SK. Doug Loughmiller, W5BL passed on Friday July 22nd 2016 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Doug was the lead instigator for ARBONET. After several great flights with the North Texas Balloon Project, we desired to host flights in North East Texas (Bohnam, Clarkesville, Paris, Texas area). From this, Amateur Radio Balloons Over North East Texas (ARBONET) was born.
Doug enjoying a Catamaran cruise in Aruba. Doug joined our family trip as Wedding Photographer and to mix in a suitcase DXpedition from the beach. It was hard to tell at times which reason we were really there for! However, it became clear – Doug grabbed more wedding pictures than contacts! The contacts we did make varied from Hawaii to Europe and the US while fighting terrible band conditions! It seemed like 20 meters was acting out like 6 meters!
Doug relentlessly calling CQ from ARUBA as P40DM
Here Doug is briefing about an ARBONET mission, and the first part of the talk was always about safety. Doug was always happy to share his knowledge! He mentored (Elmered) many ham radio operators in many ways, responsible for many getting their ham radio licence!
